🩺 ASHA Workers

ASHA (Accredited Social Health Activist) workers are community-based female health activists operating under the National Health Mission (NHM). Serving as the vital link between the public and the public health system, they play a crucial role in bringing healthcare services to the grassroots, especially targeting women, children, pregnant women, and postnatal mothers.

🎯 Primary Objective

The primary objective of ASHA workers is to ensure easy access to health services for people at the village and ward levels and to safeguard their health and well-being. They work towards improving community health through health awareness, primary care, timely referrals, maternal and child healthcare, disease prevention, and local coordination of various government health schemes.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide necessary health services to pregnant and postnatal mothers, offering guidance on birth preparedness, safe delivery, breastfeeding, and newborn care.

• Promote immunization for children and support efforts to ensure they receive vaccination services.

• Conduct health awareness drives on nutrition, sanitation, healthy lifestyles, and disease prevention.

• Raise awareness about family planning services and assist in making necessary services accessible.

• Help connect the community with government health facilities, including Anganwadis, sub-centres, and Primary Health Centres (PHCs).

• Provide basic first aid for minor illnesses and emergency situations, referring those requiring further treatment to appropriate health institutions.

• Report information regarding infectious diseases and unusual disease outbreaks to the Health Department, participating actively in preventive measures.

• Cooperate in collecting and reporting birth and death statistics.

• Participate in health surveys, government health programs, and the implementation of local health initiatives.

• Coordinate health activities in collaboration with local health bodies, including the Village Health and Sanitation Committee (VHSC).
